Paul was a recruitment consultant. He went to his local butcher’s shop and asked for a piece of steak as it was a special night (his wife’s birthday) and wanted to cook a great meal. The butcher said he was waiting for a delivery, so he asked if he could come back in a couple of hours. Paul decided to go to the supermarket instead and when he walked in, he fell over a hand basket and injured his ankle.
While he was being looked after and tended to by the customer care assistant in the managers office, he overheard a conversation – the manager received a call from a potential new starter, who was phoning to say he had taken another job and wouldn’t be starting at the end of the month.
I’m sure you can write the end of this story; it was a butcher’s assistant vacancy! Paul went back to the butcher’s to get his steak (as he had left ASDA without making it round the store) to find the butcher frustrated with his situation because his employer was continually getting deliveries too late to keep custom – so, he wanted a new job and Paul placed him at the supermarket? Well actually no. He went home empty handed to find his wife had left him.
The good news however, was that he hadn’t spent a fortune on the birthday meal! there’s a silver lining in every cloud, sometimes it’s harder than others to find, but look hard enough and you will and think hard enough and you’ll learn from it. Think of this story the next time a candidate turns down a job or a cold call gets a poor response.
If you want it on a plate then franchising is not for you.
Any Franchisor who offers “can’t lose” “1000’s of customers just waiting to buy” “too good to be true” are probably telling the truth. It is too good to be true and 1000’s of customers are waiting to buy, just not from you. Franchising is like any business you need to work hard follow proven methods and keep wanting to learn. A good franchisor will have a system that gives their franchisees a better chance of success than most and a good franchisor will have in place a strong support team as well as a well as great sales and marketing programmes. BUT a good franchisor would never suggest that you don’t need to work at it, because as we all know, if it was that easy then everyone would be rich.
Franchising has a statistical success rate of over 90% in the UK but that still means 10% fail and in my experience the difference is this 10% wanted it on a plate.
